FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that FIFA will study expanding the 2030 World Cup from 48 to 64 teams, adding 16 more participants. The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, already expanded to 48 teams. The 2030 tournament will be co-hosted by six countries across three continents: Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. Infantino stated he is in contact with US President Donald Trump 'almost every day,' and confirmed Trump will attend the World Cup final and present the trophy. The expansion proposal, first raised by Uruguayan official Ignacio Alonso in March 2025, has support from CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez but faces opposition from UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani, who call it a 'bad idea.' Critics argue it would devalue qualifiers and make the tournament 'vulgar and mediocre.'
