Meta to start production of custom AI chip 'Iris' in Sept 2026, targets doubling computing capacity to 14GW by 2027

Meta Platforms plans to begin manufacturing its custom AI chip, code-named 'Iris,' in September 2026 as part of a strategy to double its computing capacity to 14 gigawatts by 2027. The chip, part of the Meta Training and Inference Accelerators (MTIA) project, is designed in-house with help from Broadcom and manufactured by TSMC. Testing took only six weeks with no major issues, signaling progress after years of setbacks. Meta aims to reduce dependence on Nvidia and AMD GPUs and lower computing costs. The company has secured long-term supply agreements with Samsung Electronics, Sandisk, and Sumitomo Electric. Meta also announced developer access to an AI coding model, competing with OpenAI and Anthropic, which boosted its stock by 4.6%. The firm expects to spend up to $145 billion on AI infrastructure this year.
