Ukraine and Russia Exchange 205 Prisoners Each in UAE-Mediated Deal

Ukraine and Russia have completed a significant prisoner exchange, swapping 205 detainees each. This operation marks the initial phase of a broader agreement aimed at exchanging 1,000 prisoners for 1,000, facilitated by mediation from the United Arab Emirates. The released individuals include various ranks of military personnel, such as privates, sergeants, and officers, who were captured during intense combat in key frontline regions like Mariupol, Donetsk, and Kharkiv since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Ukrainian authorities confirmed that defenders from the Chernobyl nuclear plant area and Kyiv were among those returned. Emotional scenes were reported as soldiers reunited with families upon crossing into Ukrainian-controlled territory. Meanwhile, Russia's Defence Ministry verified the exchange numbers, noting that their released personnel were first sent to Belarus for medical and psychological evaluation before returning to Russia. This humanitarian effort stands out as one of the few areas of direct cooperation between the two nations, even as active fighting persists in eastern and southern Ukraine and international diplomatic efforts to negotiate a broader ceasefire continue.
