Two Companies and Tech Officer Charged in Dali Bridge Collapse Case
The US Department of Justice has charged Synergy Marine Pte Ltd, Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd, and technical superintendent Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair in connection with the fatal collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge. The indictment alleges that the defendants conspired to defraud the US and caused the deaths of six construction workers by recklessly operating the container ship Dali. Prosecutors claim the crew used a flushing pump to feed fuel to generators, a method not designed for automatic restart after a blackout, leading to a second power failure and the subsequent collision. Additional charges include violating the Clean Water Act, Oil Pollution Act, and Refuse Act due to pollutant discharge into the Patapsco River. The incident, which occurred on March 26, 2024, caused significant economic disruption and environmental damage. Nair, an Indian national believed to be in India, faces charges alongside the Singapore-based and India-based Synergy entities. The DOJ emphasized a pattern of deception and egregious safety violations that endangered public safety and resulted in the tragic destruction of the bridge.
