Transportation Department Accelerates Modernization with AI, Cutting Software Timelines by 90%
The U.S. Department of Transportation is rapidly expanding its use of artificial intelligence to modernize operations, according to Deputy Secretary Steven Bradbury. Speaking at the Government Efficiency Summit on July 16, Bradbury revealed that AI has slashed the agency's software production timeline from 18 months to 18 weeks. Internal figures show 80% of DOT personnel are now exploring AI applications. The technology is being deployed to speed up rulemaking by digesting tens of thousands of public comments and to improve grant application reviews. Beyond internal use, AI is central to the Trump administration's multi-billion-dollar air traffic control modernization effort. The FAA recently awarded Air Space Intelligence a 12-year, $875 million contract for AI capabilities, including the new SMART system for airspace management. Bradbury emphasized that AI is essential to completing the modernization by the end of President Trump's second term, though additional funding beyond the $12.5 billion already approved by Congress may be needed.
