TRANSCOM Operationalizes AI Agents for First Time During Operation Epic Fury
In a historic first, U.S. Transportation Command (TRANSCOM) deployed artificial intelligence agents to solve a logistics crisis during Operation Epic Fury in March. When Spain abruptly closed its airspace and bases to U.S. aircraft supporting strikes on Iran, TRANSCOM planners used AI tools to rapidly evaluate alternative airfields. Ryan Samuelson, TRANSCOM's chief data and AI officer, said the AI analyzed capacity constraints—including parking maximums, ground capacity, and overflight permissions—across regional bases in minutes, a task that would have taken days manually. The command relied on the Defense Department's War Data Platform and Palantir's Maven Smart System to fuse data and predict supply needs weeks in advance. TRANSCOM Commander Gen. Randall Reed noted AI now provides options, predictive insights, and validation of years of experience. The system also alerts leaders when aircraft mission capability rates drop by more than 5 percent and helps plan predictive maintenance for major lift operations.
