The future of Washington, D.C.'s historic East Potomac Golf Links has become clearer with the unveiling of a new renovation design by renowned architect Tom Fazio. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum revealed the plan, which features a par-72, 7,660-yard 18-hole course with three new water features, a practice facility, and a nine-hole short course. Significant green space will be preserved at the peninsula's tip, addressing local concerns about overdevelopment. The project follows intense debate after the Trump administration terminated the National Links Trust’s lease in December, citing financial defaults, a claim the non-profit disputes. Recently, the administration announced a partnership involving the National Park Service and private entities to execute immediate renovations while returning stewardship of other municipal courses to the Trust. Officials promise championship-quality golf at affordable rates, drawing comparisons to iconic public courses like Bethpage Black. However, skeptics remain concerned that the upscale renovation could lead to increased fees, threatening the course's accessibility for local residents who currently pay approximately $40 per round.
