Svitolina Criticizes IOC Decision to Lift Ban on Belarusian Athletes
Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has strongly criticized the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) recent decision to lift restrictions on the participation of Belarusian athletes in international competitions. Speaking at the Rome Masters, Svitolina described the IOC's shift as painful, emphasizing that missiles are still falling in Ukraine and labeling both Russia and Belarus as aggressor countries. The IOC justified its change in stance by citing athletes' fundamental right to compete free from political interference, stating it would no longer recommend maintaining bans. However, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) clarified that this announcement does not alter its current position on suspending Russian and Belarusian tennis federations. Since the 2022 invasion, Belarus has supported Russia militarily, leading to initial exclusions. While neutral participation was allowed at the Paris 2024 Olympics, team bans remained. Svitolina, along with fellow Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, continues to boycott post-match handshakes with opponents from these nations, highlighting the ongoing tension between sporting neutrality and geopolitical reality.
