STF Minister Votes to Indict Former Rio Police Chiefs in Marielle Franco Case

Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes has voted to accept charges against three former high-ranking officials of the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police in connection with the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco. The defendants include former police chief Rivaldo Barbosa, delegate Giniton Lages, and commissioner Marco Antonio de Barros Pinto, known as Marquinho DH. They face accusations of criminal association and obstruction of justice. The Attorney General's Office (PGR) alleges that the trio led a criminal organization within the police force that obstructed homicide investigations, destroyed evidence, and protected militia members. This vote is part of a virtual trial in the STF's First Panel, with other ministers yet to cast their votes. If the majority agrees with Moraes, a formal criminal action will be opened. The defense for Rivaldo Barbosa denies the allegations, claiming lack of proof and arguing that the STF lacks jurisdiction over administrative irregularities. Responses from the other defendants' legal teams were not immediately available. The case stems from the March 2018 assassination of Marielle Franco and her driver, Anderson Gomes.
