Steinmeier: Germany is a country with a migration background at Munich attack memorial
On the tenth anniversary of the 2016 Munich Olympia Shopping Center (OEZ) attack, German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier used the commemoration to take a stance on immigration and racism. The attack, carried out by 18-year-old David S., killed eight teenagers and one adult out of racist motives. Steinmeier called for more decisive action against racism, stating that Germany is a country with a migration background and that this defines the nation. He emphasized that the ideology behind the attack must never be allowed to gain ground again. Bavaria's State Parliament President Ilse Aigner and Munich's Mayor Dominik Krause also spoke, reading the names of the victims and calling for a daily stand against misanthropy. Krause linked the attack to a series of right-wing extremist acts, including those in Utøya, Christchurch, Halle, and Hanau, and criticized the difficulty society has in recognizing right-wing extremist terror.
