Ex-SNC Lavalin CEO and Humanitarian Worker Stripped of Order of Canada
Two prominent Canadians have been stripped of their appointments to the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour, following convictions for serious wrongdoing. Peter Dalglish, a humanitarian worker and founder of Street Kids International who was named a member in 2016, had his appointment terminated after being convicted in 2019 of sexually abusing two boys in Nepal. Jacques Lamarre, the former president and CEO of engineering firm SNC-Lavalin, was made an officer in 2005 but lost the honour after being found guilty earlier this year of corruption and collusion. Lamarre's offences included making payments to the family of former Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, which also resulted in the loss of his engineering licence in Quebec. A notice published in the Canada Gazette confirmed that Governor General Mary Simon officially signed off on the terminations on April 15. This decision underscores the advisory council's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the honour by removing individuals whose conduct is deemed incompatible with its values.
