Six Passengers from Hantavirus-Hit Cruise Ship Arrive in Australia for Quarantine

Six passengers, comprising five Australians and one New Zealand citizen, arrived in Perth, Western Australia, on Friday to undergo a mandatory three-week quarantine following a hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius. They were transported via a Gulfstream jet from the Netherlands to RAAF Base Pearce and subsequently moved to the Bullsbrook quarantine facility. Australian Health Minister Mark Butler described the measures as among the strictest globally, noting that while the passengers tested negative and showed no symptoms before departure, the quarantine addresses the potential incubation period. The World Health Organization has identified a 42-day potential incubation window, with further precautions for the remaining period yet to be determined. This approach contrasts with home-based quarantine protocols implemented for passengers returning to the United States and Britain. The outbreak on the MV Hondius, which was cruising between Argentina, Antarctica, and South Atlantic islands, has resulted in three deaths among eleven confirmed cases. With all passengers and many crew members evacuated, the vessel is returning to the Netherlands for comprehensive cleaning and disinfection.
