Scientists Analyze Corroded Metal to Solve Amelia Earhart Mystery
Researchers from Pennsylvania State University have conducted a study to determine if a corroded aluminum panel found in the Pacific Ocean belongs to Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra, which disappeared in 1937. Led by engineer Daniel Beck, the team utilized the Breazeale nuclear reactor to direct neutron beams through the metal sample. This advanced imaging technique, similar to powerful X-rays, aimed to reveal hidden serial numbers, paint traces, or manufacturer marks obscured by decades of ocean corrosion. The objective was to identify details invisible to the naked eye that could confirm the aircraft's identity. However, the investigation did not conclusively prove the fragment originated from Earhart’s plane. Instead, the Radiation Science and Engineering Center detected blurred characters, such as 'D24' and '335', which were insufficient for positive identification. The findings suggest the metal may belong to a Douglas C-47 cargo plane rather than the missing Electra. Despite the inconclusive result regarding Earhart, the study successfully demonstrated the viability of using neutron radiography for analyzing heavily corroded aviation artifacts, paving the way for future forensic applications in historical aviation mysteries.
