San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Seriously Injured in Car Accident
Kyle Shanahan, 46, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, suffered serious injuries in a car accident in mid-July 2026. The NFL team announced on Saturday that Shanahan broke his nose and three ribs, received more than 40 stitches on his face, and sustained a severe concussion. He was hospitalized and later discharged; the other driver was uninjured. The 49ers stated the injuries are non-life-threatening. Shanahan will participate in training camp on a limited basis starting Sunday, as concussion symptoms persist. Assistant coach Chris Foerster will represent him initially. Shanahan, entering his tenth season, led the 49ers to Super Bowls in 2020 and 2024, losing both to the Kansas City Chiefs. The regular season begins September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne.
