Russian Sports Chief Predicts Full Return of Athletes to International Competitions in 2026

Mikhail Degtyarev, the Russian Sports Minister and President of the Russian Olympic Committee, announced that nearly all Russian athletes are expected to be cleared for participation in international sports tournaments by the end of 2026. In an interview with TASS, Degtyarev highlighted that Russian national symbols, including the anthem and flag, are already being utilized at various events, marking a significant shift from previous restrictions. This development follows a period of widespread bans imposed after February 2022, when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended excluding Russian and Belarusian athletes due to the conflict in Ukraine. The turning point occurred in December 2025, when the IOC Executive Board issued new recommendations allowing athletes from these nations to compete under their national flags and anthems, particularly in youth disciplines. Degtyarev attributed the current progress to persistent diplomatic efforts and negotiations with international sports federations. He described the situation as a successful overcoming of earlier isolation, noting that the team worked diligently to reopen doors for competition, initially under neutral status before achieving full reinstatement. This forecast signals a potential normalization of Russia's presence in global sports arenas within the year.
