Russian Drones Locate and Destroy Hidden Ukrainian Howitzer in Kharkiv Region
Russia’s Center for Advanced Unmanned Technologies “Rubicon” released footage on May 11 documenting the destruction of a Ukrainian self-propelled howitzer. The artillery piece, identified as either a Bohdana or Slovak-made EVA model mounted on a Tatra chassis, was concealed under a railway bridge in the Kharkiv region near the Belgorod border. Despite camouflage measures designed to protect against FPV drones, Rubicon operators located the target, potentially using counter-battery radar or intercepted communications. The attack involved fiber-optic guided FPV quadcopters, which are immune to electronic warfare interference. Two drones breached the protective camouflage doors, followed by at least five others that systematically destroyed the vehicle’s armored cabinet, tires, and gun over a 24-hour period. The report highlights the cost-effectiveness of using inexpensive drones compared to traditional anti-tank missiles and illustrates evolving Russian drone tactics. The incident underscores the challenges Ukrainian forces face in hiding heavy equipment from advanced surveillance and precision drone strikes along the frontline.
