Russia Replaces Navy Day Parade with Poster Display Amid Ukrainian Drone Threat
Russia canceled its traditional Navy Day parade for the second consecutive year, holding a scaled-down event in St. Petersburg where Vladimir Putin was greeted by only 30 sailors in front of a giant poster of a nuclear submarine. The Kremlin cited security concerns due to repeated Ukrainian drone strikes, which have forced Russia to concentrate air defenses around Moscow and disrupt major events. In 2023, the parade featured over 40 warships and 3,000 personnel, but the 2024 event was already reduced. Ukraine has increased long-range drone strikes on Russian soil by over tenfold since January, carrying out over 2,350 missions in June alone. The threat has also affected Russia's Victory Day parade and the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
