Rubio Aims to Reset US-India Ties Amid Diplomatic Strain

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit New Delhi this month to attend the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) meeting and attempt to reset strained bilateral relations with India. The visit occurs against a backdrop of significant diplomatic friction stemming from events in the previous year, including a brief India-Pakistan conflict where President Donald Trump’s claimed mediation role was rejected by New Delhi. Tensions were further exacerbated by Trump’s invitation of Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir to the White House and the imposition of steep tariffs on Indian goods, ostensibly due to India's purchase of Russian oil and arms. Although an interim trade deal was reached in February 2026, it was effectively nullified by a U.S. Supreme Court decision. Additionally, restrictive changes to H-1B visa policies, which disproportionately affected Indian professionals, have damaged decades of trust. Rubio will meet with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to discuss trade, energy, and security issues, facing an uphill battle to repair the relationship amidst lingering resentment over Washington's recent actions and perceived favoritism toward Pakistan.
