RTVE Incurs 500,000 Euro Extra Cost by Replacing Eurovision with Special
Spain's public broadcaster, RTVE, faced higher costs by opting not to broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest 2026. The decision to boycott the event was made as a political pressure tactic to oppose Israel's participation, a move endorsed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Instead of airing Eurovision, RTVE scheduled a special edition of its music program 'The House of Music' featuring prominent Spanish artists. Financial analysis reveals that this alternative programming cost approximately 1.27 million euros. In contrast, the average cost of Spain's previous four Eurovision participations (2022-2025) was roughly 760,000 euros. Consequently, the boycott resulted in an additional expenditure of about 509,000 euros for the public entity. While the audience impact remains to be assessed, the economic outcome indicates a significant increase in spending despite saving on the mandatory European Broadcasting Union fee. This ruling applies specifically to the 2026 edition, with future participation status remaining uncertain.
