Right-Sizing the U.S. Department of Education Before Closure
The second Trump Administration is executing an executive order to close the U.S. Department of Education. To manage the transition, Education Department officials have signed 14 interagency agreements (IAAs) with other federal agencies to share responsibility for education programs. The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce has approved a package of 10 proposals to codify these agreements and transfer authority from the Education Department to other agencies. Key proposals include transferring adult literacy, career and technical education, and higher education programs (including HBCUs and TRIO) to the Department of Labor; foreign medical school accreditation to HHS; and civil rights enforcement to the Department of Justice.
