Polish President Karol Nawrocki Vetoes LGBTQI Partnership Law
Polish right-wing nationalist President Karol Nawrocki vetoed a law aimed at legally securing informal life partnerships, including same-sex couples. The law, championed by the Left party within Prime Minister Donald Tusk's center-left coalition, would have allowed couples to sign a notarized contract enabling marriage-like cohabitation. Nawrocki justified his veto by citing Article 18 of the Polish constitution, which places marriage as a union between a man and a woman under special state protection, arguing the law would create an alternative institution. Prime Minister Tusk condemned the veto as 'an expression of contempt for people and their right to happiness.' Constitutional lawyers have countered that the constitution does not explicitly prohibit same-sex marriage. The veto breaks Nawrocki's campaign promise to be a president 'of all Poles' and leaves approximately two million Poles in informal partnerships without legal protection, including access to medical information for hospitalized partners.
