ODNI Appoints Officials to Coordinate Response to Foreign Election Threats

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has appointed Dave Mastro and James Cangialosi to jointly coordinate the U.S. intelligence community's efforts against foreign interference in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. The appointees will serve as the election threats executive, a role established during the Trump administration to evaluate and publicize evidence of foreign meddling. While Republican lawmakers support the heightened focus on foreign adversaries, Democratic critics express concern over the dismantling of the Foreign Malign Influence Center and significant budget cuts to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Senator Mark Warner criticized the current strategy as unsatisfying, highlighting the lack of distribution channels for intelligence to local officials following CISA's workforce reduction. The situation is further complicated by emerging threats from artificial intelligence-driven disinformation. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence maintains that it is providing robust briefings comparable to previous election cycles to ensure election integrity.
