New commanding officer takes charge of Royal Navy mine warfare group
Commander Daniel Herridge has handed over command of the Royal Navy's Mine and Threat Exploitation Group (MTXG) to Commander Tim Castrinoyannakis on 16 July at HM Naval Base Clyde. The group, comprising around 250 personnel, is headquartered at Clyde and organized into four squadrons based at Portsmouth and Clyde. It leads the integration of autonomous technologies including AI, machine learning, and uncrewed systems for minehunting. During his tenure, Herridge oversaw a shift from crewed minehunters to modular, deployable equipment that can be moved by road or sea, working with industry on the Maritime Mine Countermeasures system. The handover comes as the Ministry of Defence confirmed the last Hunt-class vessel will leave service in 2031, marking the Royal Navy's transition toward uncrewed mine countermeasures systems. Both officers have extensive backgrounds in mine warfare, clearance diving, and maritime operations.
