Netherlands Wins 2026 World Cup Fair Play Award with Only Three Yellow Cards
Several weeks after their elimination in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup against Morocco (1-1, 2-3 on penalties), the Netherlands were awarded the FIFA Fair Play Trophy on Sunday. The award, given since 1970, recognizes the team with the best sporting spirit and behavior on and off the field. Key criteria include the number of yellow and red cards conceded. The Netherlands received no red cards and only three yellow cards in four matches, the same as Norway (with two more matches), Senegal, and Algeria. Only Tunisia, Czechia (one yellow card each), and Turkey (two) had fewer cautions, but those teams did not advance past the group stage. This is the first time the Netherlands have won the fair play award, succeeding England, who won it four years ago in Qatar. Brazil holds the record with four trophies won.
