US Navy advances plan for new $30B aircraft carrier dry dock on West Coast
The U.S. Navy is moving forward with plans to build a new multi-mission dry dock at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, to address a critical lack of West Coast facilities capable of servicing large aircraft carriers. The project, part of the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program, is backed by a potential $30 billion multi-award construction contract spanning five years plus options. Currently, only one dry dock on the West Coast (Dry Dock 6) can accommodate Nimitz-class carriers, and it lacks seismic resiliency and cannot fully handle the newer Ford-class carriers. The new dock will support depot-level maintenance for both Ford-class and Nimitz-class carriers, as well as other surface and subsurface vessels. The Navy expects the first task orders to include dredging, pier work, demolition of existing Dry Dock 3, and construction of new infrastructure such as substations, utility tunnels, and crane rails.
