NASA's Psyche spacecraft is approaching Mars for a critical gravity assist maneuver designed to adjust its trajectory and conserve xenon propellant for the remainder of its journey. Scheduled for May 14, 2026, the probe will pass within 2,800 miles of the Red Planet at approximately 19,848 kph. This slingshot effect is essential for setting the spacecraft on its final course toward the Psyche asteroid, located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Launched in October 2023, the mission utilizes solar-electric ion thrusters for the first time on an interplanetary voyage. During the flyby, the operations team will also calibrate scientific instruments, including specialized cameras. The probe is expected to reach its destination in August 2029, where it will orbit the metal-rich asteroid for 26 months. Scientists believe Psyche is the exposed core of an ancient protoplanet, composed largely of iron and nickel. The mission aims to provide insights into the formation of rocky planets like Earth, rather than pursuing space mining opportunities. The spacecraft is projected to end its mission in 2031 after completing its detailed survey of the celestial body.
