NASA's Perseverance Rover Nears Marathon Distance Milestone on Mars
NASA's Perseverance rover has traveled nearly 26 miles (42 km) across the Martian surface, approaching the distance of a full marathon. Since landing in Jezero Crater in February 2021, the rover has abraded and studied 62 rocks and collected 27 rock cores. Recently, it captured a composite selfie at a location nicknamed Lac de Charmes, situated just west of the crater's rim. This area features Arathusa, a rocky outcrop that may predate the formation of Jezero Crater and consists of igneous minerals. The region also contains megabreccia, massive rock fragments likely ejected by an ancient meteorite impact on Isidis Planitia 3.9 billion years ago. Scientists describe this zone as the 'Wild West' of the mission, offering access to some of the oldest and most geologically diverse rocks encountered so far. These findings provide crucial insights into Mars' crustal composition and planetary history. The rover continues its exploration beyond the crater rim, analyzing pristine rock compositions by removing weathered outer layers, akin to geological practices on Earth.
