NASA's Perseverance Rover Finds Complex Organic Molecules on Mars, Origin Unknown
NASA's Perseverance rover has detected complex, ring-shaped carbon molecules inside rocks in Mars's Jezero Crater, an ancient lake and river delta. The molecules contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen—the same four elements that form the basis of all life on Earth. The compounds were found trapped in carbonate and sulfate minerals, indicating that ancient liquid water transported and preserved them. However, the rover's instruments cannot determine whether these molecules were produced by ancient Martian microbes or by non-biological chemical processes such as volcanic reactions or meteorite impacts. The discovery reinforces the importance of returning Martian rock samples to Earth, as only laboratory analysis can resolve the origin of these organic compounds. Perseverance has sealed rock cores in titanium tubes for a future sample-return mission.
