NASA's Perseverance Rover Finds Complex Carbon Molecules on Mars, Origin Uncertain
NASA's Perseverance rover has detected complex, ring-shaped carbon molecules preserved inside rocks in Mars's Jezero Crater, an ancient lake and river delta. The molecules contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen—the same four elements that form the basis of all life on Earth. However, scientists cannot yet determine whether these organic compounds were produced by ancient microbial life or by non-biological chemical processes such as volcanic reactions or meteorite impacts. The carbon was trapped inside carbonate and sulfate minerals that form in water, suggesting ancient liquid water transported and concentrated these compounds. Perseverance is sealing rock cores in titanium tubes for a future mission to return them to Earth, where more sophisticated instruments can analyze them. The discovery shifts Mars research from asking whether Mars was habitable to investigating how far Martian chemistry progressed toward life.
