Mexico and the World Cup: Little Reason to Celebrate
This column by Wolf-Dieter Vogel for taz.de analyzes the contradictions surrounding Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum's attendance at the 2026 World Cup final alongside Donald Trump. While Sheinbaum presented the Golden Ball, the article highlights severe human rights crises in Mexico: three journalists (Roxana Guzmán, Josué Martínez, Alex Serna) were murdered during the tournament; enforced disappearances are approaching 135,000; and authorities are often complicit. Sheinbaum's government simultaneously filed charges against US ICE officials over 17 migrant deaths and refused Trump's demand to extradite a former governor linked to the Sinaloa cartel. The piece argues that the festive World Cup appearance masks deep corruption, violence, and impunity in Mexico.
