Meta Ray-Ban Display Smart Glasses Gain Third-Party App Support and New Features
Meta has announced significant software updates for its Ray-Ban Display augmented reality smart glasses, aiming to address previous criticisms regarding limited functionality. The company is opening the platform to third-party developers, allowing them to create Web Apps using standard technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, accessible via URLs rather than traditional app stores. Although no third-party apps are available yet, Meta provides tools to port existing applications and reuse UI components. Concurrently, Meta rolled out several new first-party features for current users. These include 'neural handwriting,' which allows users to write responses in messaging apps like Instagram and WhatsApp using air gestures via a neural wristband. Live captioning has been added for voice messages on Instagram and text chats on WhatsApp and Messenger. Additionally, the glasses now support display recording, capturing video, audio, and on-screen elements simultaneously. Navigation capabilities have also expanded, with walking directions now available throughout the United States and in major European cities such as London, Paris, and Rome, enhancing the device's practical utility for daily use.
