Maria Salgado Advances to Second Round of US Open of Surfing
Portuguese surfer Maria Salgado qualified for the second round of the US Open of Surfing, the second stage of the Challenger Series, held in Huntington Beach, California. She finished second in the sixth heat of the opening round with 7.43 points, behind South African Sarah Baum (10.03 points). Hawaiian Eweleiula Wong and South African Louise Lepront were eliminated. Salgado will face Hawaiian Bettylou Sakura Johnson, Japanese Kana Nakashio, and Australian Sophie McCulloch in the round of 32. Fellow Portuguese surfers Teresa Bonvalot and Francisca Veselko, exempt from the first round, will debut in later heats. In the men's draw, Francisco Morais and Guilherme Ribeiro are set to compete.
