Malaysia PM Anwar Not Opposed to Jho Low's US Pardon Bid

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that his government will not oppose fugitive financier Jho Low’s bid for a pardon from United States President Donald Trump. Describing the matter as a 'non-issue,' Anwar emphasized that Low is still undergoing legal processes in US courts, making formal opposition unnecessary. This stance contrasts with views from other Malaysian officials, including Trade Minister Johari Abdul Ghani and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who argued that Low should be returned to Malaysia for trial due to the significant damage caused by the 1MDB scandal. Jho Low, a central figure in the multi-billion dollar corruption case involving the 1Malaysia Development Berhad fund, remains at large after being indicted in the US. Meanwhile, Malaysian police confirmed that investigations are ongoing regarding allegations that Low attended secret meetings in Kuala Lumpur last year. The 1MDB scandal, which implicated former Prime Minister Najib Razak, led to massive financial losses and political upheaval in Malaysia. While Najib has been convicted and jailed, efforts to extradite Low have previously failed, with speculation about his whereabouts continuing.
