B.LEAGUE UNITED: Japanese League's Plan to Develop NBA Talent
The Japanese B.LEAGUE has launched B.LEAGUE UNITED, a project aimed at accelerating the growth of its best domestic players and placing five Japanese players in the NBA by 2030. The program selects promising young players in collaboration with the Japan Basketball Association and removes them from their usual environment to face more physical and demanding opponents. The first edition saw the team play against Australia's NBL Select and NBA Summer League preparation teams, including a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Players identified gaps in physicality, speed of execution, and one-on-one intensity. The project continues in summer 2025 with a tour to Melbourne to face South East Melbourne Phoenix and Melbourne United, led by former Chicago Bulls assistant coach Damian Cotter. The initiative aims to make Japanese NBA players like Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe the norm rather than exceptions, while increasing the B.LEAGUE's international visibility and attractiveness to NBA franchises.
