Lavrov: EAEU to Discuss Western Influence on Armenia at May Summit
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) will have a significant opportunity to address Western attempts to draw Armenia into their geopolitical orbit during the upcoming EAEU summit in May. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi following BRICS ministerial meetings, Lavrov highlighted concerns regarding the European Union's efforts to integrate Armenia, potentially at the expense of benefits derived from the EAEU. He emphasized that the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting, scheduled for late May in Kazakhstan, provides an optimal platform for honest and frank discussions on these emerging issues. However, Lavrov expressed regret over reports that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan might miss the summit due to domestic election commitments. The Russian diplomat described Pashinyan's potential absence as unfortunate, noting that the gathering represents a crucial chance to clear the air and resolve tensions within the union regarding Armenia's foreign policy direction and its relationship with Western institutions.
