Kremlin Warns Latvian Politicians Over Ukrainian Drone Incursions
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the recent resignations of Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina and Defense Minister Andris Spruds might only be the beginning of political fallout for Latvia. Speaking to Channel One, Peskov criticized Latvian authorities for allowing Ukrainian drones to traverse their territory toward Russia. He stated that if this situation persists, more politicians could become victims of the Kiev regime and face forced resignations due to ensuing scandals. The comments follow a specific incident on May 8, where Ukrainian drones entered Latvian airspace and crashed into an oil depot in Rezekne, damaging four storage tanks. Defense Minister Spruds resigned taking responsibility for the security failure, which triggered a government crisis. Consequently, Prime Minister Silina announced her departure on May 14 after losing the confidence of her coalition partners. The Kremlin's statement underscores Moscow's demand that neighboring countries prevent their airspace from being used for attacks against Russia, linking national security failures directly to political stability in Baltic states.
