Kenya Airways and Rubis Sign Deal for Africa's First SAF Refinery

Kenya Airways and Rubis Energy Kenya, a subsidiary of the French energy company Rubis, have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop Africa's first refinery dedicated to producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The agreement was formalized in Nairobi on May 12, 2026, in the presence of Kenyan President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron. The proposed facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 32,000 tons, requiring an estimated investment between 60 million and 70 million euros. This initiative aims to address the global aviation sector's urgent need to reduce carbon emissions, as SAF can pollute up to 80% less than conventional kerosene. Despite its environmental benefits, SAF adoption faces challenges including high costs and limited supply, with global production currently representing less than 1% of total aviation fuel consumption. The International Air Transport Association has noted that meeting the 2030 target of 10% SAF usage is unlikely without significant infrastructure expansion. This project aligns with broader international efforts, such as Brazil's Future Fuel Law, to decarbonize air travel through increased biofuel production and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
