JSS STU Congratulates Alumnus Dr. Ronaldo Laishram on Astrophysics Discovery Praised by PM Modi
JSS Science and Technology University (JSS STU) in Mysuru congratulated its alumnus Dr. Ronaldo Laishram after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his groundbreaking astrophysics discovery during the 136th episode of Mann Ki Baat on July 26, 2026. Dr. Laishram, who earned his B.E. from SJCE (now JSS STU) and later a Master's and PhD from Tohoku University, Japan, currently works as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. He led an international team that discovered a massive protocluster of young galaxies dating back approximately 12.6 billion years, observed using the Subaru Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope. The findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Dr. Laishram named the structure the 'Loktak Protocluster' after Manipur's iconic Loktak Lake. PM Modi highlighted this as an example of scientific excellence combined with cultural identity, inspiring young Indians.
