PM Modi Praises JSS STU Alumnus Dr. Ronaldo Laishram for Discovery of 12.6-Billion-Year-Old Protocluster

JSS Science and Technology University (JSS STU), Mysuru, has congratulated its distinguished alumnus, Ronaldo Laishram, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his groundbreaking contribution to astrophysics during the 136th episode of Mann Ki Baat broadcast on July 26.

Dr. Laishram completed his B.E. in Computer Science and Engineering from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), now JSS Science and Technology University. He went on to earn his Master’s and PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics from Tohoku University, Japan. He currently serves as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), where his research focuses on galaxy formation and evolution in the early universe.

According to a press release from JSS STU:

"As part of an international research team, Dr. Laishram led the discovery of a massive protocluster of young galaxies dating back approximately 12.6 billion years, observed using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii and the James Webb Space Telescope. The findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Choosing to honour his roots, Dr. Laishram named the newly discovered structure the 'Loktak Protocluster', after Loktak Lake — Manipur’s iconic freshwater lake and the largest in Northeast India."

The release added:

"The Prime Minister highlighted Dr. Laishram’s journey as an example of how scientific excellence and cultural identity can go hand in hand, noting that his decision to name the discovery after Loktak Lake has brought international attention to Manipur through the field of astronomy — inspiring young Indians to pursue excellence while staying connected to their heritage."

The JSS STU management said:
