Israeli Minister Accuses Lamine Yamal of Inciting Hate Over Palestinian Flag Gesture

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has publicly condemned Barcelona football star Lamine Yamal for waving a Palestinian flag during the club’s La Liga title parade. The incident occurred on Monday as the team celebrated their victory with approximately 750,000 fans in Barcelona. Katz posted on social media platform X, accusing the 18-year-old player of inciting hatred against Israel while Israeli soldiers combat Hamas, referencing the attacks of October 7, 2023. Yamal, who is Muslim, later shared images of himself holding the flag on Instagram. This controversy arises amidst widespread criticism in Spain and globally regarding Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which have caused significant Palestinian casualties. The event highlights the increasing intersection of sports and geopolitical protests, following similar disruptions in cycling and cultural boycotts like Eurovision. Despite the backlash, Yamal remains a key figure for the Spanish national team, having played a pivotal role in their Euro 2024 victory.
