Iridium Acquires Full Ownership of Aireon for $367 Million Amid GPS Reliability Concerns

Iridium Communications has agreed to acquire the remaining 61% stake in Aireon, its satellite-based aircraft-tracking subsidiary, for $367 million. This transaction grants Iridium full ownership of a platform that currently monitors approximately 190,000 flights daily. The deal is strategically driven by the increasing unreliability of GPS due to rising incidents of jamming and spoofing, particularly in regions like Eastern Europe and the Middle East. By consolidating ownership, Iridium aims to position Aireon not just as a tracking utility, but as a critical safety layer capable of detecting navigation interference in real time. The agreement includes extended data service contracts with anchor customers NAV CANADA and NATS through 2035. Iridium projects the acquisition will generate at least $100 million in annualized service revenue and $30 million in operational EBITDA. This move also potentially opens doors for future integration with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, which has historically relied on ground-based systems but faces growing pressure to modernize amidst global navigation security threats.
