Iraqi Intelligence Tip Foils Terror Plot by Syrian Teen in Hamburg

German authorities arrested a 17-year-old Syrian refugee in Hamburg, preventing a potential terrorist attack inspired by the Islamic State. The breakthrough resulted from a tip provided by the Iraqi secret service in late April, which identified a suspicious user in an IS-linked Telegram chat group. Following this intelligence, the German Federal Intelligence Service and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution tracked and identified the suspect. The teenager is accused of planning to kill an undetermined number of people at locations such as a shopping center, bar, or police station, using methods ranging from explosives to knife attacks. During a search of his premises, investigators seized materials indicative of preparation, including fertilizer, barbecue lighters, a balaclava, and a knife. The public prosecutor's office stated that the suspect had not yet finalized a specific target. Currently held at Hahnöfersand Correctional Facility, the youth faces charges for preparing a terrorist offense and financing terrorism. Authorities believe he acted as a lone perpetrator, with no evidence currently linking him to accomplices or a broader network behind the planned attack.
