Iraqi CH-5 Combat Drones Conduct First Strike Against ISIS in Kirkuk

The Iraqi Joint Operations Command announced that its Army Aviation unit successfully conducted the first-ever combat strike using Chinese-made CH-5 drones against an ISIS target. The operation, carried out on May 15, targeted a terrorist hideout in the Al-Shay Valley of southern Kirkuk province. Based on intelligence from the Military Intelligence Directorate, the strike completely destroyed the facility and killed one ISIS member present at the site. This event marks a significant milestone for Iraq's military capabilities, as the CH-5 drones were only recently acquired. Developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), these unmanned aerial vehicles feature a 60-hour endurance, a 1,000 kg payload, and are armed with AR-1 and AR-2 missiles. The deployment of these drones offers a more cost-effective alternative to fighter jets for hunting remaining ISIS cells in northern and western Iraq. Although previously deployed to Ain al-Asad Air Base amid border tensions, this operation confirms their role in counter-terrorism efforts. The command emphasized its commitment to using modern technology and accurate intelligence to maintain national security and eliminate terrorist remnants.
