Intensifying Storms Bring More Saharan Dust to Europe, Study Finds
A new study published in Nature reveals that Saharan dust concentrations have increased significantly over Europe, particularly in Southern Europe, Italy, the Adriatic, and Aegean regions. Researchers from the Paul Scherrer Institute analyzed over 18,000 fine dust measurements from 100+ European locations (2012-2021) using AI modeling. They identified metals like aluminum and titanium as tracers for desert dust. The study found PM10 dust levels averaged 5.3 micrograms per cubic meter in Southern Europe versus 2.1 in Northern/Central Europe, with increases of up to 0.7 micrograms per cubic meter in affected areas. The fine particles pose health risks including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, asthma, and increased lung cancer risk. The European Environment Agency estimated over 180,000 deaths in 2023 attributable to fine dust pollution above WHO guidelines.
