Intelligence Watchdog Criticizes Broad Redactions in Mandelson Documents

The UK Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) has strongly criticized the Government for applying excessively broad redactions to documents related to Lord Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US Ambassador. In its review of 337 documents, the ISC stated that redactions extended beyond legitimate national security and international relations grounds to include personal data and the identities of junior civil servants. The committee accused the Government of lacking the authority to withhold certain files, particularly a vetting report from UK Security Vetting (UKSV). It was previously disclosed that UKSV had advised against granting Mandelson the necessary security clearance, a recommendation the Foreign Office overruled. The ISC condemned this failure to adhere to security advice as unacceptable, emphasizing that security concerns cannot be dismissed for convenience. Additionally, the committee highlighted broader issues with government transparency, including the appalling use of unsecure IT systems and WhatsApp for official business. Shadow Cabinet Office minister Alex Burghart labeled the Government’s actions a cover-up, following MPs' demands for full disclosure of private messages and decision-making records surrounding the controversial appointment.
