India and US Note Substantial Progress in Trade Talks as USTR Greer Ends Delhi Visit
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer concluded a two-day visit to New Delhi after multiple meetings with India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The two sides reviewed core elements of an interim trade agreement and the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). Both sides noted 'substantial progress' by negotiating teams in recent months, but failed to announce a deadline for finalizing either deal. The BTA was announced in February 2025 and was originally scheduled for completion by fall 2025, while the interim deal framework was signed in February 2026 with an expected completion by April-May 2026. Discussions covered enhanced market access, digital trade, supply chain resilience, reduction of non-tariff barriers, and expanded cooperation in strategic sectors. Both sides reaffirmed commitment to a balanced, commercially meaningful agreement delivering tangible benefits for businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers.
