ICC Announces Major Format Changes for Men's Cricket World Cups
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced significant format changes for its two men's World Cup tournaments, approved at annual board meetings in Edinburgh. For the 2027 50-over Cricket World Cup co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, a new 'Super Series' round will see the three lowest-ranked teams compete, with only the top team advancing to a 12-team main group phase. The top three teams from each group plus the next best-placed team will enter a 'Super 7' round, with the top four progressing to semi-finals. For the 2028 T20 World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the second stage expands from eight to 10 teams (renamed Super 10), and new 'Eliminator' matches will determine the final two semi-final spots. The ICC stated the changes aim to elevate competitiveness and consequence, enhance fan experience, and provide emerging teams with opportunities on cricket's biggest stage.
