IAEA Chief Expresses Deep Concern Over Drone Attacks Near Ukrainian Nuclear Facilities

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has expressed deep concern regarding the intensification of military activities near several nuclear facilities in Ukraine. In a statement released on Thursday, the UN nuclear watchdog reported that IAEA teams registered more than 160 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating near nuclear installations within a 24-hour period. Although no direct impact on nuclear safety was immediately reported by onsite teams, Grossi warned that this surge in drone activity poses significant risks to nuclear safety and security. The IAEA chief appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to exercise the greatest restraint to prevent potential catastrophic incidents. This development occurs amidst broader escalations, including heavy Russian bombardment of Kyiv with hundreds of drones and missiles, which has further diminished hopes for a resolution to the ongoing war that has persisted for over four years. The situation highlights the fragile security environment surrounding critical energy infrastructure in the region.
