Fugitive Financier Jho Low Seeks Trump Pardon for 1MDB Fraud
Jho Low, the fugitive Malaysian financier accused of orchestrating the massive 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fraud, has formally requested a presidential pardon from Donald Trump. According to a notice on the US Justice Department website, Low submitted an application for a 'Pardon after Completion of Sentence,' which is currently pending. Low was charged in 2018 for allegedly siphoning at least $4.5 billion from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, with prosecutors claiming he pocketed over $1.4 billion and paid billions in bribes to foreign officials, including former Prime Minister Najib Razak. This development follows testimony from former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner, who stated that Low previously claimed Trump and Jared Kushner were involved in efforts to halt the US criminal probe. Leissner, who pleaded guilty and began serving a prison term in 2025, also sought a pardon recently. The 1MDB scandal previously toppled the Malaysian government and resulted in a record settlement by Goldman Sachs. Low remains at large, having evaded arrest since his indictment.
