Fugitive Contractor in Adana Earthquake Case Extradited from Thailand to Türkiye
Abdullah Aybaba, the fugitive contractor responsible for the Sami Bey Apartment building that collapsed during the February 6, 2023, earthquake in Adana, Türkiye, has been extradited from Thailand. The building's collapse resulted in the deaths of 40 people. According to the Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Aybaba fled the country via Istanbul Airport on February 7, 2023, one day after the disaster. Following his escape, judicial authorities issued an arrest warrant, and Interpol placed a Red Notice on him for international search. Aybaba was detained by Thai police on April 24, 2026, following coordinated efforts by the Interpol-Europol Department and the Turkish Embassy in Thailand. After completing official extradition procedures, he was deported from Thailand on May 14 and arrived in Türkiye to face charges of causing death and injury by negligence. This development marks a significant step in the legal proceedings surrounding the accountability for building failures during the devastating earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye in 2023.
